This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, two of the world's most widely known and most widely planted grape varieties, is common in Bordeaux and many new world winemaking countries. Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina, South Africa and the United States all generate a substantial quantity of 'Cabernet - Merlot' wines each vintage.
The combination has proved successful due to the structure brought by the smaller-berried Cabernet Sauvignon and the softer, fruiter elements brought by the Merlot. Current trends have seen increases in the proportion of Merlot in these blends, a development mostly due to the young age at which most modern wine is consumed; Merlot is typically approachable at an earlier age than Cabernet Sauvignon.
